Book II Theodore Frank The Finest Dog Around
Chapter VI
I help Bubba push the lawn mower and pull weeds out of the flower beds and lawn. Bubba had to attach a pump to the dock that pushes water up to the sprinklers in the lawn. The water also comes out the end of a hose we use to water the flower beds.
One of my jobs is to protect the boat dock from any threats. It's a very important responsibility, intruders try to land on our dock from the water and from the air. There are sail boats parasails, helicopters and even military aircraft I have to chase away. I can proudly say I've never aloud any of them to land on our dock.
But then there are the ducks they have to be some of the nastiest most cowardly vandals in existence. They jump up to the dock from the lake and start painting the planks with their duty. Just when I chase one off another jumps up on the other side of the dock. They won't stand their ground and fight they just wait until they think I'm not paying attention and try to invade.
The adversaries I have to respect are George and Georgette. They're a pair of Great Blue Herons who like to fish from our dock. I run out and try to chase them off, but no matter how loud I bark, they hold their ground and yak at me just as loudly. Then they fly up on the roof of the dock and make more racket with their talons scraping on the corrugated steal as they continue yakking it up.
My battles with George and Georgette usually end up in draw. Eventually we both give up, I lie down and rest on the dock and they fly over to the neighbors dock to continue their fishing while I watch. You have to admire them with their six foot wingspan they're able to majestically soar through the air with hardly any effort. While fishing they stand on the dock, which is already two feet above the water, but with their long necks it's easy for them to just reach down in the water and scoop out a fish. As much as I don't like them on our dock, I admire and enjoy watching them in action.
A side from all the usual yard and housework we do at the lake there was a lot of sorting and packing to accomplish at the big red house. Mama and Papa raised six children over the course of their sixty six year marriage. I guess people accumulate a lot of stuff in that amount of time.
One day Bubba was cleaning the garage and sorting through boxes. He was building a pretty big pile of garbage in the corner when I saw him toss an envelope onto it. I could smell money in that envelope, so I went and pulled it out of the garbage pile. After Bubba finished sorting through all the boxes I gave him the envelope. He opened it and found $6.50 with a note addressed to him saying it was for books he sold to somebody forty years earlier. Bubba told me "finders Keepers, my loss is your gain" and put the money in a jar with all the other money I've found. That brought my savings up to about $16.
Bubba says I have a special talent for collecting money. I've already saved up about $24, not bad for a eleven month old puppy dog. I find money on the floor, in the road and even sniff it out of garbage piles. If you wonder what a little dog could possibly need all that money for? I plan on doing all my Christmas shopping in the Mall at the Colonel Potter, Cairn Rescue Network Book II Chapter VII
